Tomba del Cacciatore, view into the burial chamber

The Tomba del Cacciatore (Eng. Tomb of the Hunter ) is the modern name of a painted Etruscan tomb in Tarquinia , Lazio . The grave was discovered in 1962. It has a staircase, an anteroom and the actual painted burial chamber, which has wide benches on three sides on which the dead once lay. The burial chamber found itself robbed. Numerous fragments from different eras were found in the rubble of the burial chamber.

The painting of the burial chamber is unique and does not show the usual festivities, but is designed as the inside of a hunting tent. The roof shows beams and painted fabrics. The posts that support the roof are painted on the walls. The upper part of the wall in particular is decorated with geometric motifs and an animal frieze. These probably imitate fabrics. The main part of the wall shows a see-through fabric through which one can look outside, where a small deer can be seen on the right wall. Various things hang from the ceiling of the tent, including a hunted wild duck, hunted game and wreaths.

The grave dates to the beginning of the fifth century BC. Chr.
