Sound archive

A sound archive (also known as a phonothek ) is a “library” for sound carriers . Until the end of the 20th century, these were mainly records , tapes and CDs . Today the recordings are archived mainly in electronic form on hard drives .

Sound archives include both music and word recordings. The sound archive is a special case . The German Music Archive (DMA) (for industrial sound carriers ) and the German Broadcasting Archive (DRA) (for radio productions) are among the most important sound archives in Germany .
