Clay has been mined in the Westerwald since the Middle Ages . Initially in open so-called bell shafts, later also in mines . Up to 1989 there were 32 pits in the area , one of which, the Good Hope , opened in 1961, could be acquired and restored by the clay mining association Westerwald . The outdoor facilities of the pit are now used as a museum, which has exhibits on various topics in its exhibition:
- Maps and illustrations of the geology and formation of the clay deposits in the Westerwald
- Presentation of the history of clay mining from simple medieval shafts to modern open-cast mining
- Recultivation and reuse of former clay pits
