Creation of the album

According to McDonald, the album was planned as his first solo album: he recorded well-known country and western songs in Nashville in 1969. The musicians were so good that the recordings did not take three days as planned, but were finished in a day and a half. However, the three days had already been paid for in advance. It was then decided to produce a second album with songs by folk singer Woody Guthrie . Ultimately, this album called Thinking of Woody Guthrie was released three months before the planned debut album Tonight I'm Singing Just For You .
