from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The settlement of Topeiros (near today's Toxotes) is first mentioned in the 1st century BC. Mentioned. It is located on the eastern knee of Nestos near a bridge crossing the river at what is now Paradisos, on the western border of Greek Thrace. The foundation of a Roman city was linked to the construction of the Via Egnatia , as indicated by the ruins of a rest house ( Mansio ) at the river crossing. To the west of the ruined city rises the Lekani Mountains , at this point the northern limit of the Thasitian Peraia . Under the Roman Emperor Justinian I , the city was re-fortified as an important checkpoint on the Via Egnatia. The later ruling palaeologists here also expanded the base. Remains of a middle Byzantine church and rock tombs from that time can be found north of the city ruins.
