Gate House

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tor House is a villa in the town of Rothesay , the capital of the Scottish island of Bute . It is located in the southeast of the city in the suburb of Craigmore above the headland of Bogany Point . In 1971, Tor House was listed in the Scottish Monuments List in the highest category A.

The villa was built around 1855 for local trader John Wilson . As an architect, Alexander Thomson was responsible for the planning. The area around Tor House developed in the Victorian Age when the island was exposed to an increasing flow of tourists, which sparked the construction of hotels, apartments and villas, including Tor House. Due to the sea panorama on the rising flanks of the headland, there was one of the main expansion areas.
