The gate of the tax ( Greek Πορτά του Φόρου Portá tou Fórou , hence also called Fórou gate ) was part of the medieval defensive wall that protected part of the city of Kos on the Greek island of Kos . The gate was damaged in an earthquake in 2017 .
Surname
The name of the gate was derived from the tax collection activity carried out here. Traders who wanted to go through the gate to get to the market had to pay taxes ( Φόρου Fórou ) for their goods here .
location
The tax gate is behind the Defterdar Mosque ( Platia Eleftherias ). The gate is about 100 meters from the Mandraki port in Kos town. In addition to the gate of taxes, the “south-east bastion” of the medieval fortification has been preserved in this area (about 40 m north). Among other things, the archaeological site Agora can be entered through the gate .

The gate of taxes was also opened in the earthquake on 20/21. Damaged July 2017. The bougainvilleas had to be removed for the inspection and restoration .
