The port of Kos ( Greek Λιμάνι Μανδράκι "Port Mandraki") is located in the city of Kos at the northeast end of the Greek island of Kos . The port serves as a seaport , for fishing , sport , tourism , as a cargo handling port and as a small naval base .

There is also a Mandraki port on the island of Nisyros, about 16.5 kilometers away .

location

The port of Kos is located in the eastern Aegean Sea across from the coast of Asia Minor . The Gulf of Kos is in front of the port . The nearest mainland point ( Turkey ) is about 7 kilometers as the crow flies . The port of Kos is dominated by the medieval fortress Neratzia . The port entrance is oriented to the northeast.

Around the port itself are the most important facilities for this, e.g. B. the port supervision, the port police but also the municipal office and the court.

Meaning and history

The port of Kos is the most important port on the island of Kos for both passenger and freight traffic. The strategic importance of the port for the control of shipping between the island of Kos and the mainland was recognized as early as the Middle Ages and was secured by the Hospitallers with the Neratzia fortress. The area surrounding the port was redesigned by the Italian occupying forces after the 1933 earthquake .

Today the port of Kos has largely only regional significance.

Structural design

The port of Kos consists of an inner polygonal harbor basin for smaller ships, which is completely enclosed with stone walls / concrete ( quay ), which can be reached through a funnel-shaped driveway, as well as several external moles / piers where ocean-going ships can dock and which also act as breakwaters serve. The quay walls of the inner harbor are planted with palm trees and released for use by pedestrians and cyclists. Freshly caught fish and other marine animals are sold directly to interested parties at the fishermen's landing stages. The inner harbor basin, including the driveway, has an area of around 9 hectares and a circumference of around 1.6 kilometers. Larger ocean-going ships, ferries and large passenger ships dock in the area of the entrance to the port, ferries with the stern facing the quay wall, whereby the entrance to the port is sometimes severely restricted. The northeastern area of the goods transshipment point (in front of the Neratzia fortress) covers an area of around 1.5 hectares. The polygonal harbor basin is a maximum of 330 meters long and 250 meters wide. The funnel-shaped driveway has a maximum width of around 90 meters and a minimum structural opening of around 70 meters. The access is also narrowed further by larger berthing ships that unload cargo. There are also jetties in the harbor basin for better use of the water surface for ships lying down.

A pier to the northeast, directly in front of the Neratzia fortress, which is primarily intended for the handling of goods, can be accessed by heavy trucks.

On the night of July 20 to 21, 2017 at around 1:30 a.m. local time, a seaquake with a magnitude of 6.7 on the moment magnitude scale occurred . The buildings in the city of Kos and the port (quay) were damaged, with two fatalities and at least 100 injured. A small tsunami flooded the port.

Marina

About 1 kilometer to the south-east there is another port for sport boats and yachts ( marina ) with its own, adapted infrastructure for recreational shipping and tourist purposes.
