The association was founded on December 3, 1992 and emerged from an initiative group that had campaigned for the natural restoration of the milled peat areas as early as the early 1980s. In 1984 this initiative reached a unanimous resolution of the municipal council, according to which the areas owned by the municipality would be renatured. In 1992, the municipality of Bürmoos acquired 23 hectares of forest and moorland from the “Salzburg” housing association and rededicated it from construction to grassland. In 1995 the community and the Torferneuerungsverein received the ARGE Alp environmental protection award for their services to the preservation of the Bürmooser Moor.

In 1996 the association set up a circular trail with 22 display boards in the Bürmooser Moor , which documents the history and nature of the moor. In 2008, the intensive work of the association was rewarded when the Bürmooser Moor was declared a nature and European protected area. In addition to this recognition, the association received numerous national and international awards.

The association currently has 563 members. About 70 members of all ages actively participate in the work on landscape maintenance and cultural work.
