Toripolliisi

Toripolliisi (German market policeman ) is a 2.20 m high bronze statue on the market square of the Finnish city of Oulu . The statue is the representation of a quite corpulent police officer .

The Toripolliisi was designed by Kaarlo Mikkonen (* 1920 † 2001). It is his only publicly displayed statue. The money was raised through donations from the citizens of Oulu. The statue was finally erected and inaugurated in September 1987. Today it is considered one of the city's landmarks.

The Toripolliisi is dedicated to police officers who used to keep the Ouluer market square in order to keep things quiet.

In Leverkusen-Schlebusch on Oulustraße, the "Toripolliisi" pedestrian traffic light , the market policeman in Leverkusen's twin town Oulu, has been regulating traffic as a " traffic light man " since May 8, 2019 .

This is intended to express the appreciation of the city partnership between Leverkusen and Oulu (1968 - 2018), which has now existed for over 50 years.
