A Tornwaldt cyst ( lat .: Bursa pharyngea (lis) ), (sometimes also spelled Thornwaldt or Thornwald cyst ) is a benign cyst (a benign, fluid-filled mass) that occurs in the upper rear nasopharynx (nasopharynx) is localized.
It is usually diagnosed by chance during computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the head as a well-demarcated, rounded mass located in the midline.
In the early embryonic development, the anterior end of the notochordal process is temporarily everted into the underlying endoderm of the pharynx. If there is an adhesion between the pharynx and the notochord, the dorsal bulge of the nasopharyngeal mucous membrane occurs as the notochord migrates back to the base of the skull. The glands contained in it secrete and, in the context of pharyngitis, can lead to the closure of the "diverticular neck" located in the midline. The production of mucus can lead to recurrent ruptures and episodes of bad breath from the release of secretions infected by anaerobes. Therapy in symptomatic patients is surgical. The Tornwaldt cyst occurs asymptomatically in 4% of the population.
The first person to describe it was the Danzig doctor Gustav Ludwig Tornwaldt (1843–1910). Title of his monograph published in 1885: On the importance of the pharyngeal bursa for the detection and treatment of certain nasopharyngeal diseases .
