The Zlín Z-43 is a multi-purpose aircraft produced by the Czechoslovak manufacturer Zlínská Letecká Akciová Společnost , or Zlín for short. Areas of responsibility are courier and liaison services, pilot training, aerobatics and glider towing.
General
The Z-43 is a further development of the Z-42 touring aircraft . Both aircraft have about 80% the same assemblies. The most obvious distinguishing feature of the Z-43 is the two additional rear seats, which is why the fuselage is about 70 cm longer than the Z-42. Furthermore, the Z-43 has a reinforced landing gear, double control and a stronger M-337A engine.
The first of two prototypes with the registration number OK-XKN took off on November 10 (December 16?) 1968 for its maiden flight. The Z-43 replaced the Yak-18A in the early 1970s in the air force of the GDR and was also used by the Society for Sport and Technology (8) from 1974 onwards. Other user countries besides the ČSSR (77) were Poland (1), Hungary (6), Algeria (29) and the Federal Republic of Germany (1). The successor model is the Z-143 . A total of 134 pieces were produced.
A prototype that was converted into a medical aircraft in 1974 did not reach series production.
Military operation
The former Tamil rebel army Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in Sri Lanka had maintained the Air Tigers air force since 2005 , which, depending on the information, consisted of one to five Z-43s. The most serious air strikes include the attack on Bandaranaike International Airport in March 2007, on the port of Trincomalee in April 2008 and the kamikaze flight on the government district in Colombo in February 2009. For details, see the civil war in Sri Lanka .
