The Zlín Z-242 is a training and sports aircraft produced by the Czech manufacturer Zlín based in Otrokovice .
development
The Z-242 was developed as a direct successor to the Z-42 and Z-142 series, mainly for the western market. The most obvious difference to its predecessors is therefore the use of a Lycoming engine instead of a domestic drive. This is also reflected in the name, because the Z-242 is only produced in version L (for Lycoming). Further differences are a more aerodynamic engine cowling and aerodynamically cleaner fuselage-surface transitions and wing ends. The cabin has a Swiss made full view hood and western instrumentation. The motor drives a three-bladed propeller MTV-9-BC from Mühlbauer or HC-C3YR-4BF from Hartzell.
The prototype with the factory registration number OK – 076 , later aircraft registration number OK – VNP , completed its first flight in February 1990. The model has been in production since 1992. In addition to its use as a civilian sport aircraft suitable for aerobatics , the Z-242L is also used by some states as a military trainer for basic training, for example in the Peruvian and Macedonian air forces and the Mexican navy.
