Zlín Z-50
The Zlín Z-50 is a single-engine aerobatic aircraft produced by the Czechoslovak aircraft manufacturer Zlín .
development
The construction work for the Z-50 began in 1973 under Jan Mikula. On July 18, 1975, the first of a total of three prototypes took off on its maiden flight. In the same year the Z-50 was on the XVII. Mechanical engineering fair presented to the public in Brno . The first series version had a Lycoming AEIO-540-D4B5 motor with a three-blade Hoffmann HO V-123 / k / 200AH propeller and was built under the designation Z-50L from April 1976. In 1976, the Z-50L took 2nd place in the team and 3rd place in the individual ranking at the 8th World Aerobatic Championship, which took place in Kiev .
At the end of the 1970s, the Z-50LA with controllable pitch propeller control went into series production. The multiple German aerobatic master Manfred Strossenreuther also switched from his Pitts Special (D-EHRL) to a Z-50 (D-EMUJ). In 1985 the Z-50LS appeared, equipped with a more powerful AEIO-540-L1B5D engine . The prototype had already flown in 1981 and was used by the XI. Aerobatic World Cup 1982 in Austria. This version won the European Championship in 1983 and in 1984 with P. Jirmus the XII. World championship in aerobatics. Today it is flown by Aerotriga from Hungary .
A slightly less powerful version with the cheaper local M-137AZ engine was called the Z-50M and flew for the first time in 1988. It was intended as an aerobatic trainer.
The Flying Bulls Aerobatics Team , sponsored by Red Bull , flew the Zlín Z-50LX until 2014 .
