Torp (Öland)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Torp is a village in the north of the Swedish island of Öland in the Baltic Sea .

The village is located immediately east of Byxelkrok and belongs to the municipality of Borgholm . Landstrasse 136 leads through Torp, which has fewer than 50 inhabitants (as of 2005).

Torp is significantly older than Byxelkrok, which later emerged directly on the coast of Kalmar Sound. In the 18th century, Torp consisted of 24 farms. In 1850 the Böda uprising took place in Torp . Nine residents were arrested. A memorial stone erected in the village reminds of this. In 1852 a silver treasure of 600 coins and jewelry was found, which was dated to the middle of the 11th century.

To the east of Torp are the remains of the village of Åker , which was one of the largest villages on Öland in the 5th century. Ebberskog , another Iron Age village, was north of Torp.
