The IJmuiden torpedo bunker is a bunker of the former defense line of the Atlantic Wall, built during the Second World War in the port of the Dutch city of IJmuiden .

Location and surroundings

The structure is located on the Kromhoutstraat south of the North Sea port of Haringhaven in IJmuiden. There are numerous other structures of the Atlantic Wall in the immediate vicinity. The interior of the bunker cannot be visited.

Building

The structure with the official designation 5606 was erected as a special construction made of solid reinforced concrete . The walls of the structure are about 2.50 meters thick, the roof is about 3.00 meters thick. Above each of the two entrance doors there is a concrete block weighing about 26 tons that could be used to barricade the bunker.

The bunker was originally connected to Schnellbootbunker 1 at the port by a narrow-gauge railway . The rails of this system are still in front of the entrance and in the building. On the outer wall you can still see remains of the camouflage paint.

history

The building was planned and built by the Todt Organization . The bunker was completed around November 1941. It was used to store torpedoes and ammunition for the nearby Schnellbootbunker 1 , which was destroyed in the spring of 1944 by the use of Tallboy bombs by the Allies . Schnellbootbunker 2 , also in IJmuiden, which has been under construction since 1943 , was not completed until the end of the war.

Although Schnellbootbunker 2 was also damaged during its construction period up to September 6, 1944 and then several times in bombing, the torpedo bunker remained largely undamaged. Compared to other bunkers on the Atlantic Wall, it is in very good condition today.
