Torradale

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Torradale is a derelict town on the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay . Torradale was in the south of the island about one kilometer northwest of the village of Laphroaig and 1.5 km northeast of Port Ellen . The closest village was the small settlement of Kilbride . In 1841, Torradale still had 32 inhabitants. In 1882 there were four buildings in Torradale, one of which no longer had a roof. It is not recorded whether the remaining three houses were occupied. Today there are the remains of three houses.

Surroundings

In the immediate vicinity of Torradale there are traces of an earlier settlement in the area. There are two places where stones were found with cup-and-ring markings , whereby one of the two cases could also be a naturally created relief. There may once have been a dun to the southwest . There is a 50 cm high and 3.5 m thick wall that encloses an area 19 m in diameter. Although this corresponds to the usual structure of a dun, the unusual, unprotected location of the facility raises doubts as to its classification. There is an old cemetery called Cnoc na Cille near the road to Kilbride . There are no tombstones to be found there, but the discovery of fragments of worked cross stones indicates that the area was used as a burial site. To the southwest of Torradale there was initially a standing stone with a height of 1.83 m. On closer inspection, however, it was found that this is part of a Stone Age cairn .
