Toshima ( Japanese 豊 島 ) is a district of the northern district ( Kita-ku , English Kita City ) of the Japanese prefecture of Tokyo . It is located in the east of the district in northern Tokyo on the banks of the Sumidagawa . Toshima is divided into eight numbered quarters, chôme . According to the 2010 census, the district had 31,139 inhabitants on an area of 1.56 km². The postal code of Toshima is 114-0003.

From ancient times to the 19th century, the area was part of the Toshima district , to which the later city of Edo / Tōkyō also belonged until the Middle Ages . The district was also the home and power base of the noble family of the same name . According to tradition, the Seikō-ji in what is now Toshima 7-chōme was donated in the 12th century by Toshima Kiyomoto , an early head of the family. In the Meiji period , the district was part of Tokyo Prefecture and in 1878 it was divided into North ( Kita-Toshima ) and South Toshima ( Minami-Toshima ) . In 1889 the village community Ōji (Ōji-mura) - from 1908 city, -machi - was established in the district of North Toshima, and Toshima was one of its six districts (ōaza) . In 1932 Ōji was incorporated into the city of Tokyo and Toshima became part of the Ōji district , and during the occupation part of the “special district” of the day care center. Toshima received its current boundaries and the current division into chôme in the 1960s.
