Touchdown 21 ( spelling : TOUCHDOWN 21 ) is a participatory research project on the subject of Down syndrome , in which people with and without Down syndrome work together on an equal footing. The project tries to open up a new perspective on the topic and at the same time to change the public perception of people with Down syndrome. By linking the research work to an extensive website and an exhibition in the Bundeskunsthalle , Touchdown 21 aims to reach a broad public. People with Down syndrome are actively involved in all areas of the project. For example, Julia Bertmann, a woman with Down syndrome, is on the advisory board of the project.

history

Trisomy 21 research group members at work

The project originally arose from an idea by the human geneticist and biologist Katja de Bragança, editor-in-chief of the Ohrenkuss magazine since 1998 . The decisive factor was the thought that so far only limited lobbying work has been carried out by people with Down syndrome. The project has been specifically implemented under the name Touchdown 21 since 2015. This is the first participatory research project on the subject of Down syndrome. As part of the research project, people with Down syndrome appear as experts on their own behalf. You will be involved in all areas of the project. For example, the Trisomy 21 research group was founded on May 14, 2014 to study the genetic and biological basis of the syndrome. The activities of this group were already discussed in 2014 by the MDR in the documentation "Modern Diagnostics - A World Without Disabilities?"

subjects

The comprehensive claim of the project is the creation of the first comprehensive cultural history of Down syndrome. Starting with the historical traces of people with Down syndrome in the pre-modern, which is researched example of the Bremen Research Group "Homo debilis" about the initial identification of people with Down syndrome as a category by the English physician John Langdon Down deals Touchdown 21 with everything there is to know about Down syndrome. This includes, for example, the investigation of the genetic developmental conditions of trisomy 21 . Since all results are commented on and illuminated by people with Down syndrome, the project opens up a new perspective.

In addition to the scientific study of Down syndrome, the project also focuses on the reality of experience of people with Down syndrome. The people involved report on their everyday life, how they deal with the disability and the issues that concern them in their lives.

publication

Web portal

All results of the research project are bundled and published on the company's own website. The website serves as an information platform for various user groups. Particular emphasis is placed on the fact that the website is linguistically understandable for everyone. In order to translate the research results into clear language, the project's website is being looked after by an expert in easy language , Anne Leichtfuß. The website will also be translated into English in the course of 2016. In addition to its own research results, the information portal also provides external research results and reports.

exhibition

The exhibition "Touchdown: An exhibition with and about people with Down syndrome" was shown from October 29, 2016 to February 18, 2017 in the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn. This was followed by another station in the KulturAmbulanz Bremen in 2017 and in the Zentrum Paul Klee in Bern in 2018. In addition to the curator Katja de Bragança in an advisory capacity and a. a. the director and science journalist Heinz Greulig and the deputy director of the Buchenwald and Mittelbau-Dora Rikola-Gunnar Lüttgenau Memorials Foundation were involved. Henriette Pleiger is the exhibition director. In turn, people with Down syndrome are also significantly involved in the implementation of the exhibition concept. After February 2017, the exhibition should also be shown in other cities, although no specific locations have yet been determined.

Chromosome workshop

The theme of the cultural and historical exhibition is on the one hand the historical and scientific exploration of Down syndrome, on the other hand questions are asked about how people with Down syndrome live and want to live. The exhibition will therefore consist of a series of exhibits from the fields of archeology , contemporary history , genetics , medicine , sociology , literature , film , theater and the visual arts .

congress

For 2020, the Touchdown 21 research group is planning a participatory congress on the subject of Down syndrome and an accompanying scientific publication. More detailed information has not yet been published. Through the congress and the Internet portal, Touchdown 21 intends, among other things, to network scientists who are researching the topic of Down syndrome worldwide.
