Tour Magdala

The Tour Magdala (Tower of the Magdalena) is a tower in the southern French village of Rennes-le-Château . It was built in 1907 after the renovation of the village church Sainte Marie-Madeleine on the estate of the village priest Abbé Saunière . The tower, built in the neo-Gothic style, was the library and Saunière's retreat. A small park and the Villa Béthania also belonged to the pastor's estate .

The floor consists of musical tiles arranged like a chessboard. 22 steps lead up to the first platform of the tower. Originally, one reached the upper platform with twelve battlements via a ladder. The tower on the outskirts of Rennes-le-Château offers a view of the surrounding villages.

The tower gained a certain degree of notoriety through a mention in the pseudoscientific book The Holy Grail and its Heirs by the authors Henry Lincoln , Michael Baigent and Richard Leigh and became the subject of modern legend formation along with other buildings in Rennes-le-Château. Graphic representations of the building can be found in the computer game Gabriel Knight 3, which focuses on the buildings in Rennes-le-Château and the village itself.
