The Tovelsee , in Italian Lago di Tovel , is a lake in the Brenta Adamello Natural Park in Italy . It has an approximately triangular shape and is about one kilometer long and about 500 m wide. This makes it the second largest lake in the “ Brenta Dolomites ” with a surface area of approx. 382,450 m². Its maximum depth reaches 38.5 m, the altitude is 1177.2 m slm
Two tributaries feed the lake: the Rislà and S. Maria Flavona torrents .
The lake became famous for the algae bloom, which occurred in the warmer summer months until the mid-1960s and gave the lake a dark red color, which is why it was also called the “red lake”. This coloring, which is unusual in freshwater lakes, was caused by the mass occurrence of a microalga from the group of dinoflagellates , the 20 μm Glenodinium sanguineum . Investigations attribute the occurrence of such a mass increase to the phosphorus content and the lighting conditions. In 2009 and 2010 this phenomenon also occurred at Seealpsee in Appenzell.
