The Tower of Hallbar , also Hallbar Tower , is a tower house near the Scottish town of Crossford in the Council Area South Lanarkshire . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. Furthermore, the associated defensive wall is classified as a Scheduled Monument . The Tower House itself is explicitly excluded from this.

history

The exact construction period of the Tower of Hallbar is not recorded. Although it is often referred to as older, the fortified tower may not have been built until the 16th century. As a fortification for the Braidwood Barony , the Tower House was certainly completed in 1581 and could also have been built around this year. The Tower of Hallbar stood empty for a long time. A first renovation was carried out in 1861. The Tower House has since been restored and can be rented as a holiday home.

The Tower of Hallbar is isolated between the villages of Crossford and Braidwood on the right bank of the Braidwood Burn stream , which flows into the Clyde about one kilometer west . The four-story defense tower has an almost square floor plan. Its masonry consists of quarry stone that was built into an irregular layered masonry . A crenellated reinforcement protrudes below the house on top.

The defensive wall is located southwest of the Tower House '. It encloses a triangular area with a side length of a maximum of 36 meters and a width of a maximum of 20 meters.
