The Townhead and Blochairn Parish Church , formerly Garngad Hill Church , is a ruined church in the Scottish city of Glasgow . In 1974 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

The Scottish architects John James Stevenson and Campbell Douglas are responsible for the design . There are contradicting information about which of the two partners was in charge of the planning. The church was built from 1865 to 1866. The stained glass windows were created by the Scottish glass artist Daniel Cottier .

Church use ended in the course of the 20th century. The vacant building fell victim to vandalism and had to be partially demolished due to the ruinous substance, despite the monument protection. In essence, the bell tower is still preserved today. This is the tallest bell tower in a church in Glasgow. Also due to its location on a 75 m high hill, it can be seen from afar and is a prominent part of Ostglasgow's silhouette. After safety concerns, the demolition of the tower was also discussed. The project was finally averted.

description

The neo-Gothic building is on Roystonhill, east of central Glasgow. The bell tower rose on the east side of the church. It is divided into four sections. Massive buttresses stretch along the edges. In the uppermost section of the tower, paired, open lancet windows are set in, which are designed as simple tracery . Above this, the tower is continued in an octagonal fashion. Tower clocks are set between the hatches of the pointed helmet.
