Townsville Radio

Townsville Radio is an Australian coastal radio station . The station is located approximately 20 minutes north of downtown Townsville , in the coastal suburb of Pallarenda. It is operated by Seabourne Electronics Pty Ltd. In June 1997 the manned operation was stopped and in 2004 the automatic, unmanned operation started. Today it belongs to the so-called Global Link Network, which was initiated by Kielradio GmbH, based in Kiel. The network has been operated by Swisscom Broadcast , based in Bern , Switzerland, since 2010 . In Global Link 12 coast stations are approximately connected around the world and provide maritime data services on shortwave channels.

history

Townsville Radio began its service on August 7, 1913. The station offered a pilotage service for ships along the Great Barrier Reef and in the eastern Gulf of Carpentaria .

During the Second World War, Townsville took on a part in maritime surveillance. The maritime surveillance headquarters for the southeastern Pacific moved from Port Moresby to Townsville and existed there until November 1942.

Services

The most important service is the transmission of e-mails to and from ships on the high seas. The transmission speed is 2400 baud binary, 5400 baud (compressed) and with the help of further compression methods up to 10000 baud.

technology

Townsville Radio works with professional ICOM transceivers. All settings are remotely controlled and maintained from the data centers in Bern and Kiel. The shortwave transmitters have a power between 100 W PEP and 600 W PEP. Semi-duplex Pactor III modems are available for radio data transmission . The systems work with software from Kiel Radio .
