The facility in Kiel-Schilksee

Kiel Radio was a German coastal radio station in Kiel-Schilksee from 1946 to 1994 . The station's callsign was "DAO".

Services

Kiel Radio broadcast messages in radio and telegraphy without interruption . In emergencies at sea, emergency traffic was handled, medical advice, weather reports, nautical messages and messages to all marine radio stations were sent. It was also possible for seafarers to send telegrams via the Kiel coastal radio station. A special service was the "one-way shipping". With this service, messages for smaller ships and yachts were read out several times on the DAO frequencies, so you didn't need your own transmitter.

The current sea weather report on 2775 kHz could be listened to several times a day with a world receiver capable of single sideband modulation .

Shutdown

On February 28, 1991, Kiel Radio stopped operating the Morse code. On the frequency of 500 kHz, the station broadcast the following message:

cq cq cq de dao dao dao gm = kiel radio / dao on 500 khz is closing down for ever. But stations staying alive as long as being in our mind. Thanks to all for good cooperation all the years since 1946 = good luck, good bye + never again DAO sk. . . -. -

On December 31, 1994, the operations center in Scharnhagen was shut down. Four years later, the transmission and reception towers were dismantled. In Kiel-Schilksee there is still one of the three reception towers and the old buildings (mainly rented). The last tower is located in the "Funkstellenweg" and is now used for mobile communications.

Takeover of the emergency channels by BRR

Since January 12, 1999, the distress radio channels 16 ( voice radio ) and 70 ( digital ) in the former transmission area of Kiel Radio have been monitored by Bremen Rescue Radio , the DGzRS radio station , which initiates emergency measures if necessary, such as alerting the sea rescue .

The new Kielradio

A new Kiel radio called Kielradio GmbH has its headquarters in the KITZ innovation and technology center. B. can send e-mails or query weather reports. You need a PC or laptop with a serial interface, an e-mail program and a marine HF modem with the Kiel radio firmware, which can be downloaded from the station's website. In addition, the ship must have a certificate that allows the crew to transmit with a shortwave radio.

Sent PACTOR also -III data, a Morse code "CQ CQ CQ DE DAO" , can thus be added to the station contact.

The transmitter and receiver are both located near Schwedeneck , about 1 km apart.

In addition, DP07 Seefunk , the private operator of the German coastal radio stations, maintains a remote station called “Kiel Radio”, which is located at the rehabilitation clinic in Damp .
