Toyota New Zealand

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Toyota New Zealand is a New Zealand automobile dealer and former automobile manufacturer based in Palmerston North . It is a subsidiary of Toyota .

history

F. Butler Limited was founded in 1946 . This company was renamed Consolidated Motor Industries Limited in 1965 and Consolidated Motor Distributors Limited (CMD) in 1970 . Toyota had already established a business relationship with this company in January 1966. In February 1967, assembly of the Toyota Corona began at Steels Motor Assemblies (SMA). In April 1968 the production of the Toyota Corolla was added by Campbell Industries Limited (CIL). The Hino Contessa 1300 had already been assembled at Campbell since 1966 .

In February 1977 Toyota acquired a 20% stake in CMD, which in turn took over SMA and CIL. The three companies became Toyota New Zealand (TNZ), TNZ Christchurch and TNZ Thames . Toyota New Zealand was founded in 1979 .

In March 1987 TNZ became a majority and in June 1992 a 100% subsidiary of Toyota. The Christchurch plant was closed in September 1996, and the Thames plant ended its assembly work in October 1998 . The main reason for this was the falling import tariffs for new vehicles. The Thames plant has been used to recondition imported vehicles since it was closed.

Toyota has been the market leader in New Zealand since 1978 (as of 2015).

Models

The models Corolla , Corona , Crown , Hilux , LiteAce and Hiace were produced from CKD kits in Christchurch and Thames . Vehicles manufactured by Toyota Australia were also imported (from May 1985 Corona Kombi, followed by the Toyota Camry from June 1987).
