History of Traco Power

The Traco Power Group was founded in 1944 by Hans Caspar, a former Swiss dentist. The first company was called Traco Trading Company Limited . In the 1940s, Traco Trading Co. Ltd. with the import and distribution of cameras, radios and electronic components. These were mainly imported from Japan, America and Italy and were brought to electrical retailers through our own representatives.

Around 1946 Hans Caspar imported some of the world's first tape recorders. These were developed by Bush Development as the successor to the BK 40 dictation machine especially for the American market. Success with these devices was not achieved because they were not only unsuitable for the Swiss market because of their susceptibility to failure, but also because of their design for 110 volts at 60 Hz. These devices were stored in Mr. Caspar's cellar until 1949, until contact with Willi Studer was established through Mr. Ernst M. Egli . He was commissioned to convert the Soundmirror tape recorders for the Swiss market. But Willi Studer decided to manufacture his own tape recorder and to design it better from the ground up.

The Traco Trading Co. Ltd. exclusively sold the Dynavox devices and this gave the company such success that the Traco Electronic Company Limite division was founded in the 1970s for in-house developments. This step has since been considered a milestone in today's corporate group. Traco Electronic Co. Ltd., also known as TRACO, began to focus on complex power supplies and DC voltage converters and established itself as one of the market leaders in this segment.

This focus was reinforced with Convertec Ltd., today Traco Power Solutions Ltd., in Wexford, Ireland. Traco Power Solutions Ltd. with around 40 employees is managed by Werner Wölfle.

In Germany, Comptek Elektronik GmbH was founded in 1989, based in Ismaning. This was renamed to Traco Electronic GmbH in 2000 and currently employs around 20 people.

In 2013, Traco Electronic Co. Ltd. the headquarters from Zurich to Baar, Canton Zug (Switzerland). In 2016, after 17 years, Rolf Caspar, grandson of the company founder, handed over operational management of the Traco Power Group to Mr. Markus Dalla Monta (CEO) and Mr. Adrian Berger (CFO) and has since focused on the role of Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Traco Power North America, Inc., was also founded in San Jose (USA) in 2016. Two years later (2018) a branch was opened in Paris under the name Traco Power France.

Areas of application for Traco Power products

The main areas of application of Traco Power products are the areas of medicine, rail technology, industrial automation, measurement and testing technology, control and regulation technology, communication, safety technology and robotics. Traco is a pioneer with its products, which is partly due to the fact that the power supplies for medical devices are subject to the ISO 14971 and ISO 13485 standards and are certified according to IEC / EN / ES 60601-1-3 3rd Edition for 2xMOPP. At the same time, the TRACO Power DC / DC converters have been tested for use in railway technology in accordance with EN 50155 and EN 61373 . The DC / DC converters from Traco Power are preferred for critical applications due to their high reliability and independence from the weather. This can also be the case when controlling electromagnets in particle accelerators, in the Arctic at research centers or in energy distributors at a depth of 10 km. On July 26, 2016, Solar Impulse landed in Abu Dhabi , the first aircraft powered entirely by solar energy . This was equipped with the DC / DC converters from Traco Power.
