The Transatlantic Economic Council ( English Transatlantic Economic Council (TEC)) is a body consisting of representatives of the United States and the European Union is. It is intended to coordinate economic cooperation between these two economic areas.

The TEC was founded during a US-EU summit on April 30, 2007 in the White House by US President George W. Bush , the then chairman of the European Council Angela Merkel and EU Commission President José Manuel Barroso . The committee is led by a double leadership with one representative each from the EU and the USA. Currently these are Michael Froman , National Security Officer for Foreign Affairs, and Karel De Gucht , EU Trade Commissioner . The council should meet at least once a year.

The main task of the council is to promote economic cooperation and partnerships and to harmonize market regulations . Furthermore, the council should deal with international transport issues (such as the Open Skies Agreement and questions relating to the electric car ), strategic oil reserves , defense policy, climate protection or alternatives to animal testing . During the founding event, a “framework agreement for deepening transatlantic economic integration between the European Union and the USA” was signed, which forms the basis for the work of the body. In July 2007 the Council officially began its work.
