Transcortin , ( CBG , from English: Corticosteroid binding globulin ) is a plasma protein in mammals , whose job is to bind and transport glucocorticoids and progesterone in the blood. It belongs to the group of α₁-globulins . Production takes place in the liver and is regulated by estrogen .

Transcortin has a high affinity for cortisol , which is believed to be biologically active only in its non-transcortin-bound form. About 75% of the cortisol in the circulation is bound to transcortin.

The molecular mass of transcortin is 52,000 Daltons , the normal concentration in the serum is about 37 mg / l, but can double during pregnancy or after taking ovulation inhibitors . With cirrhosis of the liver , the concentration is reduced.
