Transport House (Hamburg)
The Transporthaus is a mixed residential and office building in Hamburg's old town. It is on the edge of the customs canal and has the address Zippelhaus 4. The building is designated as a cultural monument with the object ID 12409.
Building history
In the vicinity of the Zollkanal, the new Zippelhaus road was built at the end of the 19th century . A number of residential and office buildings were built on its north-west side within a short period of time. One of them was the transport house, which was built by Transport-AG (formerly Heverke) in 1894 according to plans by the architect Martin Haller . The stock corporation founded in 1889 was active in the transport, freight forwarding and storage business.
The building was renovated in 1992 and in 1994 received 1st prize for the best renovated facade in the city. The Hamburg Facade Prize is awarded every two years by the Hamburg State Guild of Building Cleaners and the Hamburg Cultural Authority.
description
Like the two neighboring houses on the left, the building shows Neo-Renaissance designs . With the base storeys and the attic it has a total of six storeys. The two base floors are completely clad with ashlar and separated from the upper part of the building by a cornice . Above the masonry is made of brick and structured by stone elements.
The central axes of the facade are highlighted there by a gable flanked by pillars , which is crowned by a figure. It shows a carter or coachman in 18th century costume, holding a whip, accompanied by a puppy. In addition, the middle windows on the 2nd and 3rd floors are brought together in groups of three, which also helps to emphasize the middle, as does the large central window area in the base floors.
