Transport system

A transport system is a system for the spatial transport of people or objects according to known framework conditions and rules. It usually consists of several parts that work together to enable transports to be carried out. Transport systems can be artificial or natural systems.

A transport system is characterized by:

  1. The means of transport that enable the physical execution of the transports. The means of transport can presuppose or comprise an infrastructure . They limit the space in which transport processes can take place.
  2. The transported objects. The properties of the objects can influence the execution of transport processes.
  3. The rules and boundary conditions for carrying out transport operations. These can be given by central control and coordination or by emergent system behavior. Boundary conditions such as the transport speed can result from the interactions of means of transport, transported objects, rules and the interaction of individual transport processes.

Artificial transport systems can be fully automated (example: system of driverless transport vehicles ) or operated with human participation (example: local public transport ). They can be viewed in terms of economic, technical, and mathematical properties.
