History and activities

Transwaggon sliding wall wagon, type: Habbiins14

The company was founded in 1965. The first wagon for Transwaggon was delivered by Interconsult (Sweden) as a three-axle flat wagon unit in June 1965. The chosen design enabled vehicles to be loaded via the middle of the unit (close coupling), thereby increasing the capacity utilization by up to 50%. Together with the lowered floor height of just 1,000 mm, this was a groundbreaking development for the rail. The following years were characterized by many new developments and the establishment of further subsidiaries. Four-axle, close-coupled flat wagons were soon also available, followed by the first types of covered wagons, currently without modern wall systems. The wagons were replaced relatively soon by sliding-wall wagons, the opening of which also included the slope of the roof area. Transwaggon was a pioneer in this field, even when the task was to develop and procure such wagons for the large G2 profile. In addition, there were wagons that could be loaded or unloaded with both cranes and industrial trucks.

With a floor height of only 800 mm, the TWA 800 opened up new possibilities for the transport of large-volume machines and vehicles. This wagon was also equipped with wheel chocks that could be lowered into the floor of the wagon, which enabled simple, safe and inexpensive load securing of wheeled vehicles with pneumatic tires. A transport solution with removable, cranable car bodies was developed for swap traffic with Spain and to overcome the different track widths on the Iberian Peninsula .

The company operates a fleet of around 13,500 freight wagons (of which around 1,700 are flat wagons and around 11,800 covered wagons with hoods or sliding wall wagons) and has subsidiaries in Germany, France, Italy, Sweden, as well as representative offices in Poland, Slovenia and the Czech Republic. The group provides its services in the Europe-wide network of operating sites. The customers of the group can decide on the duration and type of use of the car. A fundamental distinction must be made between long-term rental and travel charter services (rental for individual trips). In doing so, Transwaggon leaves the selection of the railway company (EVU) i. d. Usually the client or sender.
