Trattatello in laude di Dante

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Trattatello in laude di Dante (German: Abhandlung zum Lobe Dantes ) is a font by the Italian writer Giovanni Boccaccio , which he probably created between 1355 and 1370 (according to other estimates from 1351) and edited several times. Three different versions of the text are known. In 1357 the work was also published under the title De origine vita studiis et moribus viri clarissimi Dantis Aligerii florentini poetae illustris et de operibus compositis ab eodem .

The work is considered to be one of the first modern biographies. For this purpose, Boccaccio did not resort to legends and stories, but researched specific life dates and events of Dante . He compared this with Dante's main work in order to recognize the influence of real events on Dante's work. On this basis, Boccaccio presents Dante as a role model for literary work, which he believes should be shaped by moral and religious striving. In his late work, Boccaccio put this idea into practice: his collections of biographies De casibus virorum illustrium and De mulieribus claris take up this idea and deepen it.
