Sows in this crate housing can develop grief

Mourning is a behavior in pigs in pig production . When mourning, the animals sit like dogs on their hindquarters, often leaning against the pen wall with their heads bowed and their eyes partially or completely closed. They show no reactions and appear apathetic . The disorder occurs most frequently in sows in the crate or tethered stall , as well as in fattening pigs in the housing without litter .

Mourning is a sign of inadequate housing conditions and can be attributed, among other things, to weak legs due to lack of exercise, a too low temperature of the ground preventing the animals from laying down and a generally low-irritation environment.

Other reactions in pigs due to similar causes include bar biting , chewing empty, and weaving. Animal rights organizations such as the Albert Schweitzer Foundation for our contemporaries criticize the "behavioral disturbances" in the factory farming are taken for increased productivity in purchasing and demand artgerechtere housing conditions .
