The Traxler counterattack after 4.… Bf8 – c5
The Traxler counterattack (also known as the Traxler counter gambit ) is a rarely played opening variant of the game of chess . It is named after Karel Traxler , who first played the variant against J. Reinisch in 1890. In the 1920s it was analyzed by members of a chess club in Pennsylvania . In English-speaking countries it is therefore called the Wilkes-Barre variant.
The Traxler counterattack develops from the two-knight game afterwards and begins with the moves:
- 1. e2-e4 e7-e5 2. Ng1-f3 Nb8-c6 3. Bf1-c4 Ng8-f6 4. Nf3-g5 Bf8-c5
The opening variant has the ECO code C57. With the move 4.… Bf8 – c5, which is unusual at first glance, Black ignores the threat of the point f7 and even allows a knight fork that threatens queen and rook at the same time ( 5. Ng5xf7 ). After the sacrifice 5.… Bc5xf2 + 6. Ke1xf2 , however, the basic idea of this variant becomes apparent : With 6.… Nf6xe4 + and subsequent Qd8 – h4 Black goes on to counterattack. This happened, for example, in the advisory game Readers from Pionerskaya Pravda - Michail Tal, 1969 . But if White plays 5. Bc4xf7 + or 5. d2 – d4 instead, many opening theorists believe that he has an advantage.
The main variants of the Traxler counterattack are:
- 5. Bc4xf7 + Ke8-e7 6. Bf7-d5
- 5. Bc4xf7 + Ke8-e7 6. Bf7-b3
- 5. d2 – d4 d7 – d5 6. Bc4xd5 Nc6xd4 7. Bd5xf7 + Kf8 – e7 8. Bf7 – c4
- 5. Ng5xf7 Bc5xf2 + 6. Ke1-f1
- 5.Ng5xf7 Bc5xf2 + 6. Ke1xf2 Nf6xe4 +
