Wooden boats for inland waterways are referred to as trek barges , which were initially built and used in the Netherlands and were later widely used. These barges were greeted by a towpath from the shore towed , that is, the boats were of horses , donkeys , cattle ( steers ) sometimes drawn and people. Passenger and cargo shipping was operated with the barges. With the advent of steam shipping , the barges disappeared.
