A barge is a barge , usually a non-propulsion ship that is used to transport goods.

Often the cargo is reloaded from ocean-going vessels in barges in order to transport it to the warehouses in the port area or in the surrounding area. The driveless barges are pulled by tugs . Barges are also often used on construction sites or in gravel hollows to transport gravel or building material. Classic freight goods are in particular: sand, gravel, coal, scrap, oilseeds and garbage. In the past, general cargo z. B. Coffee is transported in sacks in the ports with barges.

If propulsionless ships are put together in push convoys and are then used in inland shipping for the transport of goods, they are referred to as barges .

In the port of Hamburg , the leader of a barge is known as the Ewerführer .

Folding barge

In the area of coastal protection , barges with a bottom that can be folded down - called collapsible barges - are used for moving sand and unloading without additional aids. In inland shipping , the folding barge is a common means of transport for dumping dredged material from rivers and, above all, mining residues. Occasionally, bed load is added against a deepening of the river bed. So that the folding barge remains buoyant when the bottom is unfolded, it has a double-walled hull.
