The remains of the Tredegar Hillfort ramparts

Tredegar Hillfort (also Tredegar Fort ) is the remainder of an Iron Age hill fort west of Newport in Wales .

The plant was probably built in the 8th century BC on a dominant 90 m high hill north of the Ebbw River . The hill drops steeply to the south and especially to the east and west. The fortification had a double wall with a maximum diameter of 310 m from northeast to southwest. The pentagonal interior of the facility was a maximum of 142 m wide from northeast to southwest. The original entrance was probably in the northeast, later other entrances were broken into the ramparts. Presumably at the time of the Roman conquest the complex was abandoned.

At the end of the 18th century, the hill with the remains of the Hillfort was included in the landscaped park of Tredegar House and served as the focal point of an avenue. However, especially in the west of the facility, the ramparts were destroyed when the site later served as a golf course. To this end, a building area was developed directly west of the ramparts from 1921. The remains of the hill fort are protected as a Scheduled Monument .
