The stairs of the old harbor and the associated guardhouse ( English The Old Wharf Steps and Guardhouse ) are a national monument of the African state of Sierra Leone in Freetown . The stairs are also known under the name "Portuguese stairs".
The stairs are between the buildings of the former British Army Commissariat and the former French Company , which now serve as the City Council and Election Commission buildings. It runs from Wallace Johnson Street to the Freetown harbor jetty. They were built in 1818 on the instructions of Governor Charles McCarthy , and a year later a guardhouse was built above.
The stairs and the guardhouse were registered as a national monument in 1953.
