Cover sheet of a piano reduction from the Lohengrin opera
Faithfully managed in a historical recording.

Out faithfully the song, under which the newly married couple Elsa and Lohengrin from the eponymous opera of Richard Wagner move in at the beginning of the third and final lift in the bridal chamber. Today, as one of the two famous wedding marches, it is often played at the beginning of a wedding , usually on the organ .

In the opera, Elsa and Lohengrin's wedding night is the beginning of the end of their relationship, whereas in weddings only the positive moment of the choir is perceived.

Text and stage directions

(The introductory music depicts the splendid rustling of the wedding feast. When the curtain rises, the stage shows the bridal chamber, in the middle of the background the richly decorated bridal bed; a low bed in an open bay window. Music behind the stage; the singing is first away, then coming closer. In the middle of the song, doors are opened to the right and left in the background; women appear on the right, accompanied by Elsa, on the left the men with the king accompanying Lohengrin. Noble boys with lights ahead

Bride song (of men and women)

Faithfully led go there,
where the blessings of love keep you!
Victorious courage, minne win
unite in loyalty to the most blessed couple.
Champion of virtue, go forward!
Adornment of the youth, go on!
The rush of the festival have now escaped
Bliss of heart be won over you!

(Here the doors are opened)

Fragrant room adorned for love
take yourselves up now, removed from the shine.
Faithfully led now moves in,
where the blessings of love keep you!
Victorious courage, love so pure
unite in loyalty to the most blessed couple.

(When the two trains met in the middle of the stage, Elsa was brought to Lohengrin by the women; they embrace each other and stand in the middle. Noble boys strip Lohengrin's rich robe, strap his sword off and lay it down on the couch ; Women also strip Elsa of her precious robe)

(Meanwhile, eight women slowly walk around Lohengrin and Elsa)

Eight women (after walking around)

As God blessedly consecrated you, we Christ you for joy.

(They hold a second deal)

In the escort of love, think long of the hour here!

(The king hugs and blesses Lohengrin and Elsa)

(The noble boys admonish to leave. The trains are rearranged, and during what follows they walk past the newlyweds so that the men on the right and the women on the left leave the room)

Bride's song (sung while leaving)

Faithfully guarded stay back,
where the blessings of love keep you!
Victorious courage, love and happiness
unite in loyalty to the most blessed couple.
Champion of virtue, stay at home!
Adornment of youth, stay at home!
The rush of the festival have now escaped
Bliss of heart be won over you!
Fragrant room adorned for love
took you in, removed from the shine.

(Here the trains have left the stage entirely; the doors are closed by the last boys. The singing fades away further and further away)

Faithfully guarded stay back,
where the blessings of love keep you!
Victorious courage, love and happiness
unite in loyalty to the most blessed couple.

(Elsa is when the trains have left the room; how happily Lohengrin sank to his chest. While the singing fades, Lohengrin sits down on a couch by the bay window, gently pulling Elsa after him)
