Drinking room associations of the Zurich guilds

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The drinking room associations of the Zurich guilds were among the most important political and social institutions in the city of Zurich . Some of the drinking parlors later became the Zurich guild houses .

Emergence

The drinking tavern societies (formerly also called the Ürten community ) of craftsmen already existed in late medieval Zurich. Their origins are in the dark. In Zurich it was common practice to strengthen the cohesion of a group by eating and drinking together in a drinking room. Such communities also gathered spontaneously on the street, for example when rural residents in the city fed together because shopping together was cheaper. In addition to food and drink, the bill was evenly distributed among the participants. This equal division of the bill as well as the drinking community was called Ürte .

The importance of the drinking rooms for the internal cohesion of the guilds led in the 16th century to the fact that the guilds named themselves after their drinking rooms, while the name after trades became less common. In the early modern era, people mostly talked about the guild of the Red Eagle and rarely about the guild of carpenters .
