The Zunft zum Kämbel is a medieval guild in Zurich . Your guild house is the Haus zur Haue on Limmatquai .

history

The origins of the Zunft zum Kämbel go back to the year 1336, when it was formally founded together with 11 other guilds and the Gesellschaft zur Constaffel in the course of the Bruns guild constitution . The guilds were associations of various craft associations, guilds , guilds , corporations and master groups that represented the interests of their trade or class . At the same time they were economic, political, social and military organizations: the council of the city of Zurich was made up of the members of the Constaffel and the guild masters until the French revolutionary troops marched in in spring 1798.

The members of the Kämbel were formed from the small traders of the medieval city of Zurich, the gardeners, oilers and Gremplers: the Gartner sold all kinds of vegetables as well as stone and pome fruits , the Gremplers were tradesmen and small traders. Later, the salt people , the Wynzügel , who filled the barrels with wine for a fee, and the wine carters who worked for the state winery, were incorporated into the guild. In addition to the duties mentioned, the guild leadership drew up binding regulations for the sale of goods by its members, which were checked by the authorities before they came into force, and they supervised the market stalls “under the arches” on Limmatquai .

The most important guild master of the Kämbel was mayor Hans Waldmann (* 1435, † 1489). On April 6, 1937, the equestrian statue donated by his guild in front of the Fraumünster and created by Hermann Haller was inaugurated - the members of the Kämbel ceremoniously lay a wreath on every Sechseläuten , before they go to the parade.

After the French revolutionary troops marched in and the Old Confederation collapsed , the guild regime was ended; In 1801 the Kämbel sold their guild house. Constaffel and guilds gained importance from 1803 with the mediation act and again in 1815, as one of the thirteen constituencies or the municipal electoral guilds. In 1838 electoral guilds were abolished at the cantonal level and in 1866 also at the municipal level. With this, Constaffel and the guilds finally lost their political importance.

Guild coat of arms and origin of the name

Blazon : In blue, a golden single-humped camel .

The origin of the heraldic animal can be traced back to the Kürschnerhaus zum Kämeltier at the Münsterhof . In the late Middle Ages, Kämeltier was called the Angora goat , whose soft fur was processed into fine furs by the furriers (Zunft zur Gerwe) and after which they named their guild house ( drinking room ). After the Gerwe had moved into a house on the Limmat, in line with their profession , they gave up their drinking room, and only 35 years later did the Grempler guild of that time move into the house at the Kämbel . In these intervening years, the original meaning of the name was lost and the house was popularly known as the Kameel or the Kämbel . The Gremplerzunft changed in later years its name to guild for Kämbel and declared the one-humped camel to their emblem. For example, the (first) Swiss camel race is held under the patronage of the Kämbel , which shows the importance of the heraldic animal within the guild.

Guild House to the Kämbel

The guild's first drinking room was located near the town hall, but, like other guilds in Zurich, can no longer be clearly identified. What is certain is that the guild acquired the Haus zum Kämbel near the Münsterhof in 1487 . In 1652 the property was rebuilt and a fourth floor was added. In the early 19th century new windows were installed on the upper floors and in 1908 the ground floor was converted with round-arched shop windows. The house has been a listed building since 1999 .

The coat of arms with the camel on a blue background, which is still attached today, points to the origin of the costumes of the boys in the Sechseläuten as Bedouins dressed in Arab robes , which can be traced back to the year 1904 in photographs.

In 1442 the Zunfthaus zu Haue came into the possession of the salt people and has been known as Salzlütenhus , Houw or Salzhouw since 1450 . The term Houw (pick) is borrowed from the emblem of the salt people who hit the salt with their pick .

Guild to the Kämbel today

On May 31, 1956, 150 years after its dissolution , the newly founded Gesellschaft zum Kämbel acquired the Haus zur Haue on Limmatquai and, like all municipal guilds, participates in Sechseläuten . The Kämbel rider group is known for circling the Böögg as a wild, disordered crowd at a brisk gallop.
