Under tritanopia (from ancient Greek τρίτος tritos , German , the third party ' , according to Helmholtz third receptor trichromatic visual apparatus) is the blue blindness and Tritanomaly the blue visual impairment understood. It is a genetically caused color ametropia in which those affected lack the S- cones in the retina ( retina ). These have their reaction optimum in the short-wave, "blue" spectral range, while L and M cones respond primarily to light with a longer wavelength and serve, among other things, to differentiate between red and green. People with tritanopia therefore only have two instead of three different types of cones. In men and women, about 0.005% tritanopia and 0.005% tritanomaly are affected.
People with tritanopia are not impaired in their eyesight, as people only have about 8% S-cones, whereas L- and M-cones each have about 46% in the retina.
