The Tropfest is a short film festival that annually in Sydney takes place. The Tropfest takes its name from the Tropicana Cafe in Darlinghurst , an eastern suburb of Sydney. Founded in 1993 by John Polson , the first festival consisted of a small video projection onto a wall of the Tropicana Cafe.
In 2003, over 700 short films were submitted to the festival and the 16 finalists were shown in public parks and cafes across Australia. In Sydney, over 100,000 people gathered in front of the large video walls in Domain Park . The winners will be nominated by judges who include well-known Australian film directors, actors, screenwriters, producers and previous Tropfest winners.
