Trophy Wife

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Trophy Wife (in German about "trophy woman", "booty woman" or, more rarely, "trophy woman") is a term that is also used disparagingly for a generally good-looking young woman who marries an older, successful and well-off man. There has been a sitcom of the same name since 2013 that deals with the topic from the perspective of the younger woman.

background

In empirical behavioral biology, the attractiveness of a partner is determined on the basis of the partner's market value . Empirical studies show income as one of several factors in the attractiveness of a partner.

Larger age differences in a relationship presuppose that one of the life partners has greater life experience than the other partner. This often corresponds to the differences in the successes achieved.

Criticism of the Trophy Partner phenomenon

In middle age, men with a corresponding partner market value look for younger women who, however, are often suspected of being mainly interested in their success, money and influence. In English, the term gold digger is used to describe women who are consciously looking for a wealthy man.

With an age difference of 63 years, the wedding between former playmate Anna Nicole Smith and oil billionaire James Howard Marshall is seen as an exceptional example of such a relationship. At the time of marriage, Marshall was 89 and Smith was 26 years old.

Criticism of the concept of the Trophy Wife

The human choice of partner is shaped by a multitude of factors. There are equally successful women with significantly younger partners. Such relationships were more often kept secret in earlier times because of their lower social acceptance. Nowadays, however, it is widely accepted in society when particularly successful women have significantly younger partners.
