The destroyer of Truxtun class formed the second destroyer class of the United States Navy . The class consisted of three units that were in service from 1902 to 1919.

The construction of the Truxtun- class units, originally referred to as torpedo boat destroyers, was approved by the US Congress in 1898 , along with the construction of the Bainbridge- class destroyers . The building yard was the Maryland Steel Company. In 1902 the destroyers were put into service.

The destroyers were used as escorts during the First World War . After the war they were decommissioned in 1919 and sold to Joseph G. Hitner in 1920, who converted the USS Truxtun and USS Worden into merchant ships. The USS Whipple was scrapped.
