Tryon County, North Carolina

Tryon County was a county in the British colony (later the US state) of North Carolina .

It originated from part of Mecklenburg County west of the Catawba River by law that came into effect on April 10, 1769. Tryon County is named after William Tryon , who was governor of North Carolina from 1765 to 1771 . In 1779, Tryon County was split into Lincoln County and Rutherford County and ceased to exist after only 10 years.

Tryon County played a significant role in the American Revolutionary War . County residents were organized into security committees, and later a militia , to prepare for the fighting in Lexington , Massachusetts . On August 14, 1775, 49 residents gathered at the County Courthouse and passed a complaint against the British that came to be known as Tryon Resolves . They were among the first colonists to do this.
