Tryphon (grammarian)

Tryphon was from Alexandria originating grammarian . He lived in the 2nd half of the 1st century BC. Chr.

It is not known where he lived his life. From his numerous, almost exclusively linguistic writings, only sparse remains, mainly in quotations from other authors, have been preserved. These quotations prove the reputation that his work enjoyed in the period that followed. More than thirty titles of his works have come down to us, including a lexicon and treatises on parts of speech and their derivatives, on pronunciation, accentuation, orthography and the Greek dialects. In Peri pathon tes lexeos ("About variations in linguistic use") he tried to derive the differences between the dialect forms.

What has been preserved is Peri tropon ( About Figures of Meaning ), a compilation of 26 tropes with a brief definition and examples, probably an extract from a larger work. Other texts that have come down to us, such as an excerpt from a grammar and a treatise Perimetron ( About Verse Feet ), are now considered to be false.
