Tryton is free software for Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP).

architecture

Tryton consists of the so-called Tryton kernel and a number of ERP-specific modules that are based on the kernel.

The Tryton kernel is a three-layer , General-purpose software - Framework . The three layers of the framework are:

  1. Tryton client
  2. Tryton server
  3. Tryton database management system , usually PostgreSQL

This framework includes functionalities such as B., data integrity, modularity, user administration with finely granulated access control and the handling of simultaneous access to resources. This makes it a fully-fledged application platform that can be used for any desired purpose and not just as an ERP. A popular example of another project based on this framework is GNU Health , a health and hospital information system.

The ERP modules are:

Technical details

The client and server are written in Python , with the client using the GTK + GUI toolkit for the graphic display . As a result, Tryton is cross-platform and can be used on any platform that supports these elements. In addition to the source code , ready-made, ready-to-use installation packages are available for download for GNU / Linux , FreeBSD , macOS and Windows for both the client and the server . In addition, there is a stand-alone version for single-user computers called Neso , which includes client and server.

License, costs & business model

The platform and all modules are fully under the GNU General Public License Version 3 (GPLv3) and are therefore free software .

According to the four freedoms of Free Software, this means that Tryton can be used for any purpose (private, commercial, etc.), the source code can be examined and changed - e.g. B. to make adjustments to your own needs, or to incorporate Tryton into your own projects - and it is allowed to pass the program on to third parties or to change it, and to pass these changed versions on to third parties. The further details of the GPLv3 must be observed.

Regardless of the license, Tryton can also be purchased free of charge. B. as a download from the project website or via the package manager of the operating system used. There are no fees for the initial download or updates. In addition, there are no modules or elements that are not free software or are due for these additional fees, in the sense of freemium or open core or similar business models, such as those used in the related software Odoo , in which the core ) the software is free, but additional functions that extend the core are not free.

The rights to the Tryton brand belong to the charitable Tryton Foundation based in Belgium . The development of Tryton is primarily driven free of charge by a number of service companies whose business model is to offer their customers commercial support for Tryton in return for payment. Consulting, installation, maintenance, customization development etc. are paid for. The prerequisite for being recognized by Tryton as such a partner company and being listed on the Tryton website is that the company actively participates in the further development of Tryton and B. regularly contributes self-developed code to the Tryton codebase. Currently (as of March 2015) 17 such service companies are listed as official Tryton partners; two of them are based in Germany and one in Switzerland. The remaining companies in non-German-speaking countries are distributed worldwide as follows: France 3, Spain 3, Colombia 2, Argentina 1, Australia 1, Belgium 1, Brazil 1, India 1, Mexico 1.

Origin & history

The first version of Tryton was released on November 18, 2008. It was a fork of version 4.2 of Tiny ERP (later OpenERP , now Odoo ).
