Odoo is an integrated ERP software solution ( Enterprise Resource Planning ) with a dual license model. The target group are companies of all sizes. Odoo includes u. a. the following modules: CRM , website / e-commerce, billing, financial accounting, production, warehouse management, project management, document management.

The community version is an open source version, while the enterprise version complements the community version with various commercial and service functions.

The source code for the OpenObject framework and the ERP core modules are managed by the Belgium-based Odoo SA. The current open source release is version 13.0.

Flectra is a fork from Odoo that contains most of the enterprise features for free.

Source code model

Odoo SA / OpenERP SA published the software as open source software from the start. Starting with version 9.0, the company switched to an open core model, which includes subscription-based proprietary enterprise software and cloud-managed software as a service , as well as a community version with limited functionality.

Community and network

In 2013 the nonprofit organization Odoo Community Association was founded to promote the spread of Odoo and to support the collaborative development of Odoo functions.

Odoo SA changed its business model from a service company to software distribution and SaaS business. The focus is on customer-specific programming, support and other services in cooperation with an active global community and a network of over 1250 official partners and integrators . According to its own information, Odoo has 3.7 million users worldwide.

Apps / modules / components

The main advantage of Odoo is its expandable architecture. A large number of freelancers and organizations develop Odoo apps or modules and offer them for sale or for free download on the Odoo marketplace. The main Odoo components are the OpenObject Framework, approx. 30 core modules (also called official modules) and more than 16,000 community modules for the various Odoo versions. Most Odoo modules are available in the Odoo SA marketplace.

education

Odoo was used as a component of university courses. It also became compulsory subjects for high school graduation in France such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint. A study on experimental learning suggested considering Odoo (then known as OpenERP) as a suitable alternative to proprietary systems to complement teaching.

Odoo also offers a free program called Odoo Education that allows teachers and / or students to create an Odoo database for academic purposes.

Publications

Several books have been written about Odoo, some cover specific areas such as accounting or software development.

Software and architecture

Odoo uses Python scripting and PostgreSQL as a database management system. The software is accessed via a web browser in a one- page app developed in JavaScript . The Community Edition repository is on GitHub.

Version support

The last three LTS versions are supported in parallel. This means that when a new LTS version appears, an older version has reached the end of its life and is no longer supported. As an example, 9.0 LTS is supported along with 10.0 LTS and 11.0 LTS, but it will reach end of life when 12.0 LTS is released.

Company history

In 2005, Fabien Pinckaers, the founder and current CEO of Odoo, began developing his first software product TinyERP. Three years later the name was changed to OpenERP. The company began to grow rapidly and in 2010 OpenERP became a 100+ employee company.

In 2013 the company received a Deloitte award for the fastest growing company in Belgium with 1549% growth over a period of five years.

In 2014, OpenERP went beyond the boundaries of traditional ERP players and the company was renamed Odoo, a name without restrictions that allows the company to grow in any direction. In 2015, Inc. magazine placed Odoo among the top 5000 fastest growing companies in Europe.

Awards and recognition

Odoo received several awards. Before changing its name, it received OpenERP awards such as Trends Gazelle, Deloitte Technology Fast 50 Award and InfoWorld 's BOSSIE Award 2013. After changing its name to Odoo, it won BOSSIE Awards 3 consecutive years (2014, 2015 and 2016).
